The Sixty Steps and Belle Vue

Explore this hidden architectural gem and secret garden in Glasgow's West End

6 min

Overview

A short walk exploring this hidden architectural gem, with its secret garden in Glasgow's west end. You will hear the story of local businessman, John Ewing Walker and how his ambition in the 1870s to develop the north bank of the river resulted in a commission to Alexander "Greek " Thomson, the top architect of the day. The result is a unique structure combining practical function with flights of fancy and a tranquil garden and stunning views down to the Kelvin valley. This B listed edifice is Thomson’s only public structure and is recognised as a rare example of his work.
