In 1936 the Gibbes Museum of Art presented the first formal exhibition of Solomon R. Guggenheim’s collection of modern art. Featuring works by Marc Chagall, Vasily Kandinsky, and Fernand Léger, among many others, the show was a revelation for the people of Charleston, as well as members of the art world across the United States and Europe. Now, eighty years after the first exhibition, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Gibbes Museum of Art have come together to revisit this important intersection in their institutional histories with another exhibition, Realm of the Spirit: Solomon R. Guggenheim Collection and the Gibbes Museum of Art. Organized by The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, with the Gibbes Museum of Art, this exhibition features thirty-six works and is accompanied by a full-color catalog published by the Guggenheim Foundation.
