Overview

Amsterdam is one of the most visited European cities in the world. It’s famous for its tulips, incredible cheeses, liberal and party culture, fantastic architecture, inspiring talent, coffee shops…

Amsterdam started out as a fishing village in the thirteenth century. As legend has it, the city was founded by two fishermen from the Northern Province of Frisia who, along with their dog, so happened upon the banks of the Amstel River in a boat. Here began its story: going through an eighty-year war which ended in independence for the Netherlands; becoming a refuge for Jews, Protestants and Huguenots; enjoying the Golden Age which made it one of the richest cities in the world, and suffering two wars which devastated it. But, like its tulips, it always reemerged and flourished.
